Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats used more strong pitching and a little timely hitting to beat the Hickory Crawdads 3-1 Tuesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium to take the first two games of the four-game series. Savannah pitching has given up just four earned runs in the first six games of the team's eight-game home stand.
The Gnats (14-17) broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run third inning. CF Darrell Ceciliani singled to start the inning and 3B Aderlin Rodriguez walked with two outs to put two men on for SS Robbie Shields. On a 2-0 pitch, Shields lined a double deep to the left-center field gap to score both Ceciliani and Rodriguez and give the Gnats a 3-1 lead that Savannah pitching made hold up.
Savannah starter Greg Peavey gave up just one unearned run in the second inning on his way to earning his second win of the year. Peavey gave up four hits, did not walk a batter and fanned five. He threw first pitch strikes to 19 of the 24 batters he faced.
The Gnats' bullpen of Angel Cuan and Josh Edgin combined on three scoreless innings to finish the game. Cuan retired all six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings. The Crawdads (19-12) put the tying runs aboard against Edgin in the ninth, but Edgin punched out C Kellin Deglanto convert the save and protect Savannah's 3-1 win.
The Gnats will look for their third win in a row with RHP Taylor Whitenton(2-0, 0.77) taking on Hickory RHP Randol Rojas (5-0, 3.86) Wednesday in game three of this four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and gates open at 6 pm. The pre-game show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 6:50 pm.
