Jesus Brito tied the game with a solo home run in the second, but Kannapolis added a run in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Wes Freeman drove in the other West Virginia run in the home half of the seventh. Strickland (0-4) took the loss, while Justin Collop picked up the win.
PARTLY SUNNY SOMETIMES: The Power lead the all-time series with Hagerstown 35-33 dating back to 2005. West Virginia has fared better at home during those 68 games, going 17-11 at Appalachian Power Park. Which playing at Municipal Stadium, the Power have won 18 of 40 games. In 2009 during West Virginia's first year as a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate, the Power lost six out of ten games against the Suns.
FREEMAN GONE/ GONZALEZ HERE: Wes Freeman was sent to the GCL Pirates roster earlier today and Elevys Gonzalez was promoted from the Gulf Coast League. Freeman hit .155 during 24 games as the Power's everyday right fielder and currently leads the SAL with 44 strikeouts. Gonzalez was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2008 and split time last year between the GCL Pirates and State College.
KO'd: West Virginia hitters have struck out 87 times during their recently concluded homestand, 48 of which were during the series with Kannapolis. Intimidators pitchers combined to strike out 15 batters on Friday, seven on Saturday, 15 again on Sunday, and 11 on Monday. Prior to the Kannapolis series, Power hitters had not struck out more than 12 times in any one game this season.
TWO 'FER: Bengie Gonzalez had two hits in Sunday's loss and snapped an eight game hitless streak. Prior to a sixth inning single Sunday afternoon, the infielder's last base hit was a fifth inning single on April 29 at Greenville. Gonzalez went 0-25 between base hits and saw his average drop from .211 to .160 during the streak, but has climbed back to .170 heading into play tonight.
ALL BATS SILENCED: On Sunday, the Power were shutout for the fourth time in 2010 and for the second time by this Intimidators this season. West Virginia was also held without runs in back-to-back games at Savannah on April 9 and 10. The Power used pink bats during their first time through the order on Sunday in an effort to promote breast cancer awareness, and several players continued to use the colored bat throughout the game. Regardless of what lumber was being used, West Virginia matched its single game season-low hit total of three, all of which were singles.
POWER POINTS: Rogelio Noris had his four game hitting streak snapped on Sunday... Evan Chambers has walked once on Monday and leads the SAL with 27, five more than Greenville's Chris McGuiness... Power hitters have struck out 283 times this year, second most in the SAL. Only Lakewood has struck out more (303 times).
