Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Charleston, SC - On the strength of six runs in the first two innings, the Charleston RiverDogs took a commanding lead early on and never let up. The Augusta GreenJackets fell by a 6-4 score in Charleston, unable to dig out of the early deficit on Wednesday night.
Zack Wheeler struggled in the start following his first professional win, allowing six runs on six hits in 2.2 innings. Wheeler (1-3) walked three, hit a batter, threw a pair of wild pitches and struck out two.
Charleston scored first in the opening frame on a Rob Lyerly RBI single. With two outs in the second, Ray Kruml singled to score Kelvin Castro and add to the lead. Jimmy Paredes doubled home a run and Justin Milo singled home another to make it a three-run inning. After Luke Murton walked, Wheeler's first wild pitch scored Milo from second. On the next pitch, Wheeler was wild again to score Murton.
The GreenJackets bullpen gave their squad a fighting chance as a trio of relievers - Jeremy Toole, Brian Irving and Chris Gloor - held the âDogs scoreless over the final 5.1 innings on just four hits.
In the fifth inning, Ryan Cavan's single - the third hit of the inning - put the Jackets on the board for the first time. Augusta scored again on a run-scoring single from Ryan Lollis in the sixth. The Jackets added two more in the seventh when Tommy Joseph reached on an error to score Chris Dominguez. Joseph came home on a double to right from Luke Anders a few pitches later to pull Augusta to within two runs.
After the Anders double, Ryan Flannery came out of the RiverDogs bullpen to retire the last seven hitters of the game, striking out four to earn his fifth save of the year. Charleston starter Jairo Heredia (1-0) got the win in his first start of the year for the RiverDogs since being transferred from high-A Tampa on Monday. Heredia scattered 11 hits over 6.2 innings, yielding four runs and walking one while striking out three.
All ten runs in the RiverDogs' 6-4 win over the GreenJackets scored with two outs in their respective innings.
The Jackets will look to pick up their first win of the series on Thursday night with Kyle Vazquez (3-0, 2.54) in search of his fourth win of the year. He'll face fellow righty Jose Ramirez (1-1, 2.62). First pitch from Joseph P. Riley Park will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
