Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
GREENVILLE, SC -- Brody Colvin's night went downhill in a hurry Wednesday, as the BlueClaws fell behind early and lost 8-7.
Colvin (2-5) was rocked for seven hits and seven runs (five earned) in just 1.2 innings. He was coming off his best start as a professional, a dominant 6.1 inning two hit win against Charlestown, but couldn't replicate that success on Wednesday.
The Drive (18-15) scored a run on three hits in the first inning to take an early lead, but the BlueClaws (17-16) answered back as Jiwan James drove in a run on a base hit to tie the game in the top of the second.
That was as close as the BlueClaws would get to a lead. Greenville erupted for six runs on six hits in the bottom of the second, and built up a 7-1 advantage.
Lakewood wouldn't go quietly. The BlueClaws scored a run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to cut the deficit to three.
Colby Shreve did his part to keep the BlueClaws close in relief of Colvin, allowing just two hits in 5.1 strong innings.
Trailing 8-4, the BlueClaws mounted their comeback in the ninth. Jeremy Barnes drew a leadoff walk, and one out later Darin Ruf brought him in on an RBI triple to make it 8-5.
Ruf tied a team record with five hits, including a triple and his fourth home run of the season in the third.
With Ruf standing on third, Stephen Batts homered to bring the BlueClaws within one, but that is as close as the BlueClaws would get.
Anatanaer Batista (1-1) got the win for the Drive, while Dennis Neuman picked up his fifth save of the season.
Thursday lefty Matt Way (1-3, 5.51) will face RHP Pedro Perez (2-1, 4.71). First pitch is at 7:00 pm.
