Legends Take Series Opener over Asheville, 6-2

Robby Donovan worked seven strong innings as the Lexington Legends took the opener of a four-game series with the Asheville Tourists 6-2 in Asheville Wednesday night.

Donovan (2-3) allowed five hits and two earned runs in his longest outing of the year. He walked one and struck out one.

The Legends took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jose Altuve doubled to lead off the game, went to third on a wild pitch by Asheville starter Jonathan Vargas (L, 0-4) and scored on an infield out by J.D. Martinez.

Asheville went in front with two runs in the third. Helder Velazquez reached first on an error by shortstop Jiovanni Mier. Eliezer Mesa followed with an infield hit, and one out later, Joe Sanders singled to load the bases. Velazquez scored on a sacrifice fly by Kent Matthes, and Mesa scored on a wild pitch.

The Legends took the lead for good in the fifth. Kody Hinze doubled to lead off and advanced to third on a single by Jonathan Meyer. Hinze scored when Andy Simunic grounded into a force play, and Grant Hogue tripled to score Simunic, giving the Legends a 3-2 lead.

The Legends wrapped it up with three more runs in the sixth, two scoring on a double by Meyer.

The series continues with a 7:05 p.m. game Thursday.
