Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
For the first time this season the Kannapolis Intimidators are a game above the .500 mark. On the strengths of a season-high 15 hits, two home runs by Trayce Thompson and five double plays rolled by starting pitcher Joe Serafin, the Intimidators defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds by the score of 8-3 in game one of a four game series.
The Intimidators (16-15) took the lead in the second inning on the first of two home runs by Thompson. With Ian Gac on, Thompson sent a 3-2 pitch screaming over the wall in left-centerfield. He added his second home run to almost the same spot over the left-centerfield wall to make it 5-0 in the fifth inning. After Thompson in that inning, Brady Shoemaker doubled and was brought home on a single by Miguel Gonzalez to go up 6-0 after five.
Joe Serafin (4-2) had his share of trouble in the ballgame, as he went seven innings, allowing 10 baserunners but escaped time and time again with double play balls. He rolled double plays with two on in the first and second, one with them loaded in the fifth and two more in the fourth and seventh with one on. He is the first Intimidators pitcher to record four wins this season.
The Intimidators added two more runs with two outs and no one on in the eighth as Gonzalez and newcomer Jesus Villegas singled, Daniel Wagner hit an RBI-single and Rafael Vera hit an RBI-double to make it 8-0. The Intimidators put up a season-high hit mark of 15. Nick Ciolli, Gac, Thompson and Gonzalez had two hits each and Villegas had three in his season debut.
Jake Cowan, the Shorebirds (16-16) starter made his worst start in his professional career as he takes his first loss of the season and goes to 3-1 as he allowed six runs in five innings. Ryan Buch for the Intimidators pitched a clean eighth before struggling in the ninth, allowing three runs, and being taken out in favor of JR Ballinger to finish the game.
The Intimidators are now 1-5 in games as a .500 team and will look to get to two games above .500 on Thursday in game two as the league-leader in strikeouts Terry Doyle (3-2) will matchup against Mike Hobgood (2-1).
