Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - Designated Hitter Nick Santomauro drove a line drive into the left-center field gap with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the Savannah Sand Gnats (21-12) a 3-2 victory over the Rome Braves, Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah. The extra-inning affair was the first the Gnats had played at home after going 1-3 in extra-inning contests on their recent eight-game road trip. With the win, Savannah improved to nine games over .500 for the first time this year.
Gnats CF Pedro Zapata began the bottom of the tenth inning with a bunt base hit. A wild pitch moved Zapata to second. Juan Lagares then bunted, reached first and advanced to second on reliever Robinson Lopez's throwing error, while Zapata moved up to third base. The Braves then intentionally walked SS Wilmer Flores to load the bases for Santomauro who drove a 2-0 pitch into the gap to bring Lagares trotting home with the winning run. Santomauro was 2-5 in his first multi-hit game as a Gnat. Lagares finished 3-5 with two RBI.
Savannah had to deal with hard-throwing Braves' RHP Julio Teheran and then Lopez, who was throwing even harder. The Gnats picked up the game's first run in the bottom of the third, when Jeff Flagg singled to right field, advanced to second and third on a pair of groundouts, and scored on Lagares' single to right.
Savannah left-hander Mark Cohoon cruised through the first three innings, striking out six batters, until giving up a leadoff home run to Braves shortstop Mycal Jones leading off the fourth inning that evened the game at 1-1. Rome (12-20) took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a safety squeeze laid down by leftfielder L.V. Ware. The lead did not last long as Savannah tied up the game in the following half inning. With two outs, Zapata doubled to right-center field and Lagares drove him home with a single into center field to even the game at 2-2.
Cohoon finished seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter. Gnats reliever Erik Turgeon offered up three scoreless innings in relief of Cohoon to earn his first win of the year in his team-leading 13th appearance.
RHP Brandon Moore (1-2, 2.83) for Savannah takes on RHP Arodys Vizcaino (4-2, 4.35) in game two of this four-game set on Thirsty Thursday at 7:05 pm.
