Portland Sweeps the B-Mets in a Twinbill, 3-1 and 6-2

(Portland, ME) - The Portland Sea Dogs (41-43) swept their second straight doubleheader at Hadlock Field, defeating the Binghamton Mets (30-54) 3-1 and 6-2 on Wednesday night in front of 5,070 fans. The two teams were rained out on Tuesday night and delayed 1 hour and 32 minutes before starting the twinbill at 6:32 PM.

In the opener, the Sea Dogs scored all three runs in the first inning off losing pitcher RHP Brad Holt (0-3) and RHP Junichi Tazawa (8-5) tossed five strong innings on one run in Portland's 40th win of the season. Tazawa's only blemish was a first inning two-out solo homer by 1B Ike Davis. The righty fanned two, allowed two hits and did not issue a walk, retiring 15 of 17 batters faced.

Holt was perfect in 4 of 5 innings and finished with a Double-A high of 10 strikeouts. The righty's only walk was to 2B Ryan Khoury to lead off the third. RF Reid Engel followed with a single to move Khoury to third base. The first run scored on Engel's stole base and a throwing error by C Mike Nickeas, allowing Khoury to score. Holt fanned C Juan Apodaca and CF Josh Reddick but LF Ryan Kalish provided the game-winning RBI with a double - 3B Jorge Jimenez knocked in the third run with a single.

LHP Dustin Richardson pitched two scoreless innings on one hit and two strikeouts to earn his 2nd save of the year.

In the nightcap, the Sea Dogs scored six runs in the first two innings off losing pitcher RHP Jake Ruckle (0-1) to earn their 21st win at Hadlock Field. RHP Adam Mills (5-5) won his 3rd straight start, hurling five scoreless frames on six hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Mills held the B-Mets to 0-for-5 with runners-in-scoring position with only one runner reaching third base.

CF Josh Reddick led off the first inning with a double and advanced to third base on an infield-single by Kalish. Jimenez hit into a run-scoring double play to put Portland in front for good. The Sea Dogs scored four of five runs in the second inning with two outs. SS Argenis Diaz drew a walk, 2B Iggy Suarez singled and RF Matt Sheely smacked an RBI single to left field. Ruckle retired Reddick on a ground out but Kalish laced a 2-run single, Jimenez doubled to knock Ruckle out of the game. 1B Jon Still greeted LHP Edgar Alfonzo with a bloop, 2-run single to center field.

RHP Chris Province and RHP T.J. Large each yielded runs over 1 IP of relief for Portland. LHP Edgar Alfonzo, LHP Mike Antonini and RHP Connor Robertson combined to work 4.1 scoreless frames for the B-Mets.

The Sea Dogs and the B-Mets conclude their 3-game series on Thursday night beginning at 7:00. LHP Felix Doubront (5-2, 3.71) makes his 16th start of the season against RHP Dylan Owen, who is 1-5, 5.48 in 13 starts with Binghamton.
