Connecticut Defenders News Release

NEW BRITAIN, CT- The Defenders and Rock Cats split a doubleheader Wednesday night at New Britain Stadium. Connecticut took game one 3-1 and fell 7-3 in game two placing the four game series at 2-1 in favor of the Defenders.

Connecticut plated all three runs in the first inning of game one and didn't look back as they had a strong pitching cast to follow. 2B-Brock Bond got aboard on an error to start the game off and extended his on base streak to 52 games. LF-Bobby Felmy then slapped an RBI triple (4) and later scored on 1B-Brett Pill's sac fly. RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve drove in the final run with an RBI double and the Defenders had a 3-0 cushion.

LHP-Madison Bumgarner then took the hill and he only made one mistake leaving one over the plate for a solo jack by RF-Juan Portes in what was a shortened four innings of work. Bumgarner allowed five hits, walked one and fanned two in the no decision as he prepares for an appearance in the XM Futures Game July 12.

Reliever Dan Griffin (6-5) earned the win tossing a scoreless inning allowing one hit, a walk and struck out a pair. Joe Paterson pitched two hitless innings to earn his tenth save of the season.

In game two things seemed the same as Connecticut took an early 1-0 lead but quickly lost it as the Rock Cats sent all nine batters to face spot starter RHP-Mike Musgrave and touched him up for three runs off of three hits.

Connecticut responded in the third with a one out triple (4) by 3B-Brad Boyer. Pill plated Boyer with an RBI groundout, Martinez-Esteve singled and C-Tyler LaTorre tied the game with an RBI double to left in which LF-Danny Berg lost in the lights.

LHP-Ben Snyder (3-3) had taken over for Musgrave and looked great until 3B-Luke Hughes doubled down the leftfield line to score SS-YanCarlos Ortiz and give the Rock Cats the lead back. Snyder allowed the one earned run off of three hits, and struck out three during four innings of work in the loss. New Britain broke the game open with three unanswered runs in the sixth as Hughes led the charge going 4 for 4 with three RBI. The win snapped an eight game winnings streak this season for Connecticut at New Britain Stadium, eleven dating back to last year.

Both teams will wrap up the series tomorrow as the Defenders seek out another series win behind LHP-Jesse English (5-5) and the Rock Cats look to RHP-Matt Fox (6-3) for a series split. First pitch is slated for 7:05pm.
