Porter Delivers Again
November 7, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. â Kris Porter's short-handed goal with 2:32 to play in regulation handed the Fresno Falcons a 3-2 win over the Pensacola Ice Pilots on Friday at the Pensacola Civic Center. The win moves the Falcons back above .500 to 4-3-0 on the year.
Fresno notched the only goal of the first period while skating with a five-on-three advantage at 15:30. Ice Pilots goaltender Brian Eklund stopped a one-timer from Porter and then two successive rebounds before Brad Mehalko finally went top-shelf for his first goal in a Falcons uniform.
The Falcons would add to their lead 8:17 into the second when Mike Sandbeck cleaned up a rebound off an initial shot from Scott Borders for his first in a Falcons uniform. The Ice Pilots finally beat Fresno netminder Terry Friesen with a power play goal at 11:44 from Tyler Kindle to cut Fresno's lead to 2-1 as the clubs headed to the third period.
Pensacola poured on the pressure in the final frame, outshooting Fresno, 18-5. They managed to tie the game at 12:36 when Greg Chambers scored his third of the season and looked to take their first lead of the night when they went on the power play with four minutes remaining. Porter foiled their best-laid plans, though, beating Eklund to the blocker side to finish a two-on-one with Drew Schoneck for his seventh of the year and Fresno's first short-handed tally of the season.
For the second straight game Friesen shut down the opposition by making a team season-high 39 saves.
The Falcons and Ice Pilots play the back half of their two-game set tomorrow night, which can be heard live on KAAT 103.1 FM beginning at 4:50 p.m. PST with the pre-game show. Fresno then continues with its third game in three days on Sunday afternoon in Biloxi against the Mississippi Sea Wolves before traveling to face the Texas Wildcatters on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
Fresno does not make its ECHL debut at home until Sunday, Nov. 16, at 5 p.m. against the Bakersfield Condors at Save Mart Center at Fresno State. Single-game tickets for the entire 36-game home slate at Save Mart Center are on sale now and begin as low as $8.
