Mayes Blanks Long Beach, Aces Win 4-0
November 7, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
LONG BEACH, Calif. â Lance Mayes posted Alaska's first whitewash on the road in nearly two years with 33 stops as Alaska ended its two-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory Friday night at Long Beach Arena.
Alaska slogged its way through a scoreless first period, mustering just six shots on goal despite having four power play opportunities. Long Beach outshot the Aces 11-6 over the first 20 minutes but was stymied by Mayes, making his first professional start after a four-year stint at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.
The Aces looked like a different club in the second period, dominating from the first shift and breaking the scoreless tie at 4:41, as Mark Smith beat Dan Vandermeer one-on-one and then snapped his sixth goal of the year into the back of the net blocker side. Kimbi Daniels polished off a beautiful rush with a backhander at 13:51 for his first goal of the year and a 2-0 Alaska lead heading into the final period.
Charles Linglet's power play goal effectively ended the competitive phase of the game just 1:03 into the third period. The Aces have scored at least one power play goal in each of their first eight games. Joe Talbot flipped in a rebound to cap the scoring with 14:39 left in regulation. Mayes faced at least ten shots in every period in completing Alaska's first road shutout since December 7, 2001, when Petter Sandstrom blanked the Bakersfield Condors with 26 saves.
The Aces (5-3) finish up their three-game road trip at Bakersfield's Centennial Garden tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. AST. The Condors are 2-6-1 following a 4-2 loss in Las Vegas Friday. All Alaska games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
