Norfolk Tides News Release

June 21, 2007 - Scott Podsednik had three hits and Gavin Floyd scattered six hits over 8.2 innings, leading the Charlotte Knights to a 5-1 win over the Tides in front of 8,736 fans at Harbor Park Thursday afternoon.

Podsednik hit a two-run home run in the 5th inning and added singles in the 7th and 9th, leading Charlotte's 10-hit attack. The speedy outfielder also made a diving catch in four territory in the 4th inning, helping the Knights end Norfolk's four-game win streak.

Floyd (5-3) nearly turned in Charlotte's second straight complete game, but ran into his only rough patch of the game with two outs in the 9th. Mike Cervenak and Jason Dubois started Norfolk's late rally with back-to-back singles, and Terry Tiffee followed by reaching on a strikeout that eluded catcher Wiki Gonzalez for a wild pitch. Adam Stern then drew a bases loaded walk to plate Norfolk's lone run, chasing Floyd in favor of reliever Ehren Wasserman.

After a lengthy at-bat, Wasserman induced catcher Morgan Clendenin to ground out to first on the 8th pitch of the at-bat, picking up his second save of the season.

Floyd struck out eight and walked two, lowering his ERA to 3.22.

Craig Anderson (0-1) took the loss for Norfolk in his Tides' debut, allowing five runs on six hits in five innings of work.

Norfolk's bullpen of Andy Mitchell, Steve Green and Cory Doyne turned in a combined four scoreless innings of relief.

The Tides, who finished up their homestand at 5-3, take to the road on Friday for the start of an eight-game trip. Left-hander Kurt Birkins (3-2, 3.12) takes the mound for the Tides against Buffalo right-hander Jeff Harris (3-4, 5.11), with first pitch slated for 7:35 p.m.
