Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings managed just enough offense to eke out their third straight victory. Dario Pizzano's two-run home run in the sixth inning led the way to a 2-1 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the series opener.
Victor Sanchez returned to the mound for the first time since May 30th for the LumberKings. The Venezuela native had been on the temporary inactive list, and he was solid in a short outing in his return to action. Sanchez pitched only three innings, allowing three hits and one unearned run while striking out four batters.
Wisconsin opened the scoring with a run in the opening frame off Sanchez. Orlando Arcia reached on a throwing error to start the rally. Martin Peguero, making his first start at shortstop as a LumberKing, threw wide on a routine grounder to allow Arcia on base. After a single by Tyrone Taylor, Victor Roache singled in Arcia to give the Timber Rattlers a 1-0 lead.
The LumberKings failed to muster much offense until the sixth inning. Clinton stranded runners in scoring position in both the first and second innings. In the sixth, Clinton finally touched up Wisconsin starter Leonard Lorenzo. Dario Pizzano crushed a deep drive over the right field fence for a two-run home run to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 LumberKings lead.
With the limited outing from Sanchez, the LumberKings leaned on Charles Kaalekahi in the piggyback role. The right- hander impressed in his first appearance at home, pitching four scoreless innings in relief. Kaalekahi earned his first victory of the season while surrendering two hits.
Along with Kaalekahi, Mark Bordonaro pitched in front of the home crowd for the first time. The reliever did not disappoint, fanning four Timber Rattlers over two shutout innings while giving up a single base hit. Bordonaro closed out the win to pick up his first career save.
The LumberKings and Timber Rattlers continue the four-game series on Wednesday at Ashford University Field. Clinton sends right-hander Matt Anderson (3-6, 4.48) to the mound against Wisconsin right-hander Eric Semmelhack (1-3, 4.14). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM CT.
