GENEVA, IL - Ryan Mathews rapped out two hits, including a two-run homer, to spearhead a 9-5 whipping of the Kane County Cougars by the Beloit Snappers in Midwest League action on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
The Snappers have now won three in row and, at 47-28 (4-1 in the second half), maintain the best overall record in the West. The Cougars slip to 30-41 (0-5 in the second half) and remains winless since the All- Star Break.
In the first inning, Beloit caught a break and used it to move out to a big early lead against starter Brian Smith (2-3). With one on and two outs, Renato Nunez reached on a throwing error, putting men on second and third for Matt Olson (2-4, 3 RBI, run). The All-Star first baseman cashed in with a two-run single to right. Mathews (2-2, HR, 3 RBI, 2 runs) then drove a ball deep and gone to left field for his eighth long ball of 2013and a 4-0 advantage. It was also Mathews' third homer of the season off Smith. Nick Rickles capped the inning with a second consecutive homer, his fourth, for a fifth run.
Starting on the mound for the Snappers was reigning Midwest League Pitcher of the Week Seth Streich (8- 4) and he continued his outstanding pitching of late with another successful night on the mound. In six-and- a-third innings, Streich gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits and retired seven men on strikes without giving up a walk.
Kane County got on the board in the second when Jeimer Candelario (2-5, RBI, run) scored on a fielder's choice, but Mathews put Beloit's lead back up to five in the fourth as he came across on a double play.
Olson and Mathews each came through again in the fifth as Olson drove in a run with a single and a Mathews RBI double made the score 8-1.
An unearned run in the sixth and an RBI single by Oliver Zapata in the seventh brought the Cougars to within 8-3 and they added a fourth run in the eighth on a groundout. Daniel Robertson knocked in an insurance run for the Snappers with an RBI single in the top of the ninth and Candelario closed out the scoring in the bottom half on an RBI groundout.
These two teams have an afternoon game scheduled for Wednesday, starting at 12:00pm. RHP Derek DeYoung (4-3, 4.31 ERA) is Beloit's scheduled starting pitcher, while RHP Jose Rosario (0-3, 5.47 ERA) will pitch for Kane County.
