Ray Provides Pop in Bees' 6-4 Defeat

Burlington Bees News Release
Andrew Ray continued his torrid start to the second half, belting a home run for the fourth consecutive day, but the Burlington Bees fell 6-4 to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Tuesday afternoon at Perfect Game Field.
If Andrew Ray had the only say in the Bees' (27-43, 1-4) start to the second half, his team would be undefeated. Unfortunately, he does not, because for the third time in five games, the bullpen surrendered a 4-0 lead in a loss to the Kernels (45-28, 5-0).
Ray got his team off to a great start, belting a solo home run in the fourth off of Mason Melotakis. The former 5th-round pick in 2011 has now hit a home run in four consecutive games.
In the fifth, Ray added to his gaudy numbers, bringing home two more runs on triple that scored Kyle Johnson and Chance Ross. Ray is now 13-for-21 in the second half with four home runs and 10 RBIs.
Brandon Love was absolutely spectacular, throwing five scoreless innings in relief of Reid Scoggins. Scoggins delivered one scoreless frame in the start before giving way to the southpaw. Love only allowed one hit and turned it over to the bullpen for the seventh inning.
Austin Adams allowed a leadoff double to Max Kepler to start the seventh and quickly got two groundouts. Michael Quesada's infield single brought home Kepler, and Adams then walked J.D. Williams and Niko Goodrum to load the bases. Joey Krehbiel (2-4) entered the game and the first pitch he delivered to Jorge Polanco was sent to the wall for a bases-clearing triple.
The 4-4 tie did not last very long, because in the eighth, Krehbiel walked Travis Harrison to start the inning and then allowed a two-run shot to Max Kepler.
Kaleb Merck (1-0) pitched 2.1 perfect innings out of the bullpen for his first win of the season and helped the Kernels win their fifth consecutive game.
The Bees will try to end the Kernels winning streak on Wednesday night when Pat Lowery takes on Jose Berrios at 6:35 p.m.
