Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons (31-45, 4-2) got off to a hot start and won easily on Tuesday night, picking up their fourth win of the second half with a 10-1 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks (47-28, 3-3). The Loons have won 13 of their last 18 games, dating back to June 6.
The Dodgers top two selections of the 2013 MLB Draft both made their professional debut, with Chris Anderson throwing the first two innings and Tom Windle pitching the third and fourth innings.
"I saw two innings of work from each guy," Loons manager Razor Shines said. "We really liked what we saw. They were electric and both kids have good arms. Anderson really let the ball fly. Tom (Windle) looks like he knows how to pitch and he had some good off-speed stuff. When the Dodgers send us their number one, two and three (Brandon Dixon) guys out of the June draft, it tells you what they think about Midland."
Anderson, who was selected 18th overall by Los Angeles earlier this month, made the start and struck out the first four hitters he faced. He struck out the side in the first inning, ringing up the first three hitters in the South Bend lineup on fastballs of 94, 96 and 95 miles-per-hour. Anderson finished with five strikeouts and no walks. He gave up one hit in his two innings of work.
"You always like to envision yourself going out there and dominating and that leads to a lot of success," Anderson said. "You just look forward to building on that performance and getting better. There were a couple pitches that I thought were mistakes. There are always ways to get better."
Great Lakes scored five runs on Silver Hawks starting pitcher Kyle Winkler (1-2) in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Malcolm Holland scored the first run when Corey Seager reached on an error by South Bend third baseman Brandon Drury. Aaron Miller drove in Seager and Tyler Ogle on a double down the right field line. Miller scored on a Brandon Dixon single to left field and Dixon scored on a single by eight-hitter Jose Capellan, who was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Holland reached on a single in the second inning, stole second base and scored on a Seager single. Seager was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Windle, was taken at the No. 56 pick by the Dodgers, entered the game in the third for the Loons and picked up where Anderson left off, throwing two scoreless innings. The University of Minnesota product did not allow a hit, while striking out two and walking one.
"I didn't feel much pressure," Windle said. "Chris went out there and set the tone. It got me excited to go out there and do my thing. It was exciting to be in the stadium. To be on the field and in the stadium in front of this crowd, they were in the game. It just kind of gets you going a little more."
James Baldwin scored the seventh run for the Loons, coming home in the fourth inning. Baldwin singled to center field, stole second and took third on a wild pitch. When South Bend catcher Ronnie Freeman dropped the third strike on a Leo Rodriguez strikeout, Baldwin took home with some aggressive baserunning.
Winkler went four innings in his start for South Bend, giving up seven runs (four earned) on six hits. He struck out six and walked two.
The Loons added runs in the fifth and the sixth. Miller scored in the fifth, coming home on a Jeremy Rathjen single. Holland scored in the sixth, coming home again on a Seager single.
Blake Perry gave up two unearned runs on three hits in three innings of relief for the Silver Hawks. Perry struck out four and did not walk anybody. Kyle Schepel threw the eighth for South Bend, giving up one unearned run.
South Bend added a run in the seventh inning. Carter Bell doubled to left field and scored on an Andrew Velazquez single.
Geoff Brown (5-1) threw three innings of relief for Great Lakes to pick up the win, giving up one run on four hits, while striking out three and walking two.
Loons reliever Owen Jones pitched two scoreless innings to finish the game for Great Lakes. Jones gave up three hits, while striking out four and issuing no walks.
Baldwin added the Loons 10th run of the game in the eighth, coming home when Ogle hit into a fielder's choice.
The Loons start a six-game road trip on Wednesday, with the first three games at Lake County. Game time on Wednesday is 7 p.m. Miguel Sulbaran (3-2, 4.05 ERA) is expected to start for Great Lakes. Luis DeJesus (2-7, 6.32) is slated to pitch for Lake County.
The Great Lakes Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
