Dragons Earn Homestand Split with 8-1 Win

Dayton, Ohio-Joe Hudson and Seth Mejias-Brean both drove in three runs and Jesse Winker collected three hits as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 8-1 on Tuesday night before a crowd of 8,474 at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons won three of their last four to earn a split of the six-game homestand to start the second half.

Lansing took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Dragons tied the game in the second when Jesse Winker doubled and scored on Joe Hudson's single off the third base bag.

Dayton took the lead in the third with a five-run inning as they sent 11 batters to the plate. Seth Mejias-Brean singled with two outs to drive in Sammy Diaz from second and make it 2-1, and Jeff Gelalich followed with a hit to right to drive in Winker and give the Dragons a 3-1 lead. After Daniel Pigott was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Joe Hudson delivered a two-run single to right to make it 5-1, and Pigott scored on an error as the Dragons extended their lead to 6-1.

In the eighth, Mejias-Brean delivered a two-run single to give the Dragons an 8-1 lead and close out the scoring.

Dragons starting pitcher Nick Travieso (2-2) allowed one run over five innings to earn the win. He gave up three hits and three walks while striking out two. Mike Saunders earned his first save, working the final three and one-third innings. Saunders retired 10 of the 11 batters he faced.

The Dragons collected 11 hits. Junior Arias had one hit to extend his hitting streak to 11 straight games, the longest of the year for a Dayton player. The Dragons batted .316 as a team on the six-game homestand.

The Dragons travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan to take on the West Michigan Whitecaps on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the start of a three-game series. Jackson Stephens (0-1, 6.75) will make his second start for the Dragons against West Michigan's Edgar De La Rosa (3-2, 7.41). The Dragons next home game is July 4th vs. the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
