Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL- A ninth-inning run helped the Peoria Chiefs avoid their first home shutout of the season, but wasn't enough in a 4-1 defeat to the Quad Cities River Bandits on Tuesday night. The loss dropped the Chiefs to 1-4 on the half and 39-33 on the season heading into game two of the series on Wednesday.

Quad Cities scored first with a run in the third inning against Brad Watson. Brett Phillips led off with a walk, advanced to second on a balk and third via a wild pitch. Carlos Correa was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners, and a Jesse Wierzbicki sacrifice fly to left field plated Phillips while moving Correa to second. Roberto Pena cracked a single to left to score Correa and put the River Bandits up 2-0 before Watson escaped the inning on a ground out.

The River Bandits added two more runs in the fourth inning. Austin Elkins opened the frame with a triple to right field and was driven in on a Jordan Scott single. Scott stole second and moved to third on a Teoscar Hernandez single. Jobduan Morales singled to plate Scott and move Hernandez to third. With runners at the corners Watson forced Wierzbicki into a ground out to escape the inning, but not before the River Bandits extended their lead to 4-0.

The Chiefs never threatened starter Vincent Velasquez or reliever Juan Minaya until the ninth inning. With one out Jacob Wilson doubled and Jordan Walton moved him to third with a single. Patrick Wisdom lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Wilson preventing the shutout by making the score 4-1, which would ultimately be the final tally.

Watson (0-1) gave up four runs on seven hits and one walk while fanning one in four innings pitched. Sam Tuivailala tossed 1 2/3 scoreless frames without allowing a hit and walking two while punching out one. Thomas Lee pitched 2 1/3 perfect innings while striking out three.
