Great Lakes Loons News Release

The Great Lakes Loons got just enough offense to ride their pitching staff to a 2-1 win over the South Bend Silverhawks in front of 5,455 fans at Dow Diamond.

The attendance of Tuesday's contest pushed the grand total for the season over 300,000. The current total attendance for games at Dow Diamond is 303,197.

The Loons jumped out to an early lead when third baseman Juan Rivera connected for his fourth home run of the season, a line-drive which just cleared the left-field wall to make it 1-0 in favor of the Loons. Rivera would deliver what would ultimately be the game-winning run in the third when his two-out RBI-single scored Francisco Lizarraga to give the Loons a 2-0 lead.

South Bend picked up their only run in the ninth when Steve Mena reached base on a Rivera fielding error, moved to third and scored on a pair of groundouts to second to cut the Loons leads in half. The Silverhawks would come no closer as Loons reliever Chris Malone got Yunesky Sanchez to hit a grounder to second for the final out of the ballgame.

James Adkins started for the Loons and went his customary three innings without allowing a run and struck out a career-high five. Tim Sexton (3-0) picked up his third win of the year going five shutout innings allowing five hits while striking out five as well. Malone came on as the closer in the ninth and picked up his first professional save.

Eddie Romero (8-7) picked up his seventh loss of the season going six innings and allowing two runs before Jorge Perez and came on to pitch three scoreless innings.

The Loons-Silverhawks series continues on Wednesday night. Game time is set for 7:05pm. Left-hander Paul Coleman will get the start for the Loons. You can get your tickets for the ballgame by calling (989)-837-BALL of by logging on to loons.com.
