West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Following four wins that featured walk-off runs in a five game span for the Whitecaps, West Michigan completed the sweep of a double header against Fort Wayne by winning, 4-1.
The âCaps lead 4-0 in each end of the double header, but in game one blew the lead and needed to rally for three runs in their final at bat. In game two, the only run that the Wizards could produce was a solo homer by Cedric Hunter in the fifth.
Gorkys Hernandez went 2-for-3 at the plate for West Michigan with a triple and two runs scored.
Scott Sizemore snapped an 0-for-20 slump with an RBI and a run scored in the third. Michael Bertram added an RBI single to cap three-run rally in the inning.
Kelvin Cedano earned the victory with three innings of relief for West Michigan. He relieved Ramon Garcia who gave up a lead off single by Javis Diaz in the first, then retired the next eight batters in a row to complete three innings of work.
Diaz was thrown out at home by Hernandez when he tried to score on a fly out to center by Eric Sogard.
Luis Marte pitched the seventh inning to earn his second save as a Whitecap.
Andy Underwood allowed all four Whitecaps runs as the starting pitcher for the Wizards. Derek McDaid followed with three innings of scoreless relief.
The Whitecaps are 10-0 against the Wizards at Fifth Third Ballpark this season.
Game Two: Jordan Newton delivered a walk-off, two run single in the bottom of the seventh and final inning as the Whitecaps rallied past Fort Wayne, 7-6. It was the fourth time in the last five games that West Michigan has won in walk-off fashion.
Newton went 4-for-4 with three RBI in the game.
Jonah Nickerson fell short in a bid for his third complete game of the season for the Whitecaps when he allowed three runs to give the Wizards a 6-4 lead in the top of the seventh.
Phil Napolitan recorded the final two Fort Wayne outs of the seventh and earned a victory for his third consecutive appearance.
Eric Sogard went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI for Fort Wayne.
West Michigan held a 4-0 lead after two innings.
Big Numbers: Tuesday's attendance pushed the Whitecaps total attendance for the season to 357,725 to move ahead of 2006. There are three regular season home games remaining and the âCaps are chasing the total of 370,153 from 2005. If the Whitecaps beat that mark it will be the club's second highest attendance in the last five seasons.
