Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Four Kernel errors led to three unearned Swing runs as the Cedar Rapids Kernels lost their second game in a row to Quad Cities, 6-3, on Monday night in Davenport.

Quad Cities jumped on Kernels starter Kelly Shearer (1-2) for four runs in the first inning. Shearer finished the night allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits with four walks and a strikeout over 2.2 innings pitched to take the loss.

The Kernels out hit Quad City 7-6, as Matt Sweeney was 2 for 3 with a home run, his 17th of the season. Abel Nieves was 1 for 4 with an RBI and Wil Ortiz had a sac fly RBI to account for the Kernels three runs.

Quad City starter Brandon Dickson (11-6) allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings to get the win. Kenny Maiques came on after Sweeney's HR in the ninth to squelch a Kernel rally and earn his 31st save of the season.

The win gives the Swing a series split with the Kernels, but Cedar Rapids takes the season series, 8-6.

With the loss, the Kernels fall to 35-28 in the second half and 73-59 overall as Quad Cities lengthens their lead over the second place Kernels to 4-1/2 games with only seven games remaining. The Kernels are also in a second place tie with Peoria for the MWL West wild card spot and Kane County is lurking in fourth place, only a game behind the Kernels and Chiefs.

The Kernels now head to Beloit for a two game series on Tuesday and Wednesday before returning home to Veterans Memorial Stadium for the final two regular season home games with Burlington on Thursday and Friday. Cedar Rapids wraps up the regular season on the road at Peoria for a crucial three game series.

Tommy Mendoza starts for the Kernels tonight against Cole Devries for Beloit. The game can be heard on the internet at www.kernels.com , or in eastern Iowa on 1450 KMRY AM starting at 7 pm, CDT.
