Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (August 28, 2007) - The Burlington Bees (29-34, 59-73) rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, but Oliver Marmol's RBI single in the tenth turned into the game-winner in a 4-3 victory for the Swing of the Quad Cities (40-23, 78-54) at Community Field tonight. The Bees have dropped three straight and have lost 11 of 14 against the Swing this year.
The Swing scored a run in the top of the first inning against Bees' starter Daniel Gutierrez. With two outs, Tony Cruz walked and scored from first on a double by Steve Hill. Gutierrez would settle in and pitched well overall. After a one-out single in the second, he went on to retire seven in a row. In the top of the fifth, Tyler Henley reached on an error and Tim Dorn followed with a long fly ball to right. Jamar Walton tracked the ball and got his glove on it as he crashed into wall. The ball fell out of his glove and Walton stayed on the ground as Dorn circled the bases for an inside the park home run. Walton had to leave the game with an injured right shoulder. Gutierrez retired the next three batters and worked through a career-high seven innings.
Swing starter Shaun Garceau pitched six shutout innings and limited the Bees to just four hits. Jason Cairns followed with a scoreless seventh, but the Bees were able to break through in the eighth. With one out, Jesus Soto singled and Derrick Robinson lined a two-run home run to right-center field to get the Bees to within one at 3-2. It was Robinson's second home run of the season and both have come against the Swing. Kyle Sadlowski came in to finish the eighth, but the Swing brought in Kyle Mura in the ninth. Jeff Bianchi led off with a single and went to second on a balk. Jeff Howell moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. With the infield and outfield pulled in, Michael Thompson hit a fly ball to left-center field that landed just out of the reach of a racing Henley for an RBI double that scored Bianchi and tied the game. After an intentional walk to Jase Turner, Soto reached on an error by Jose Garcia at second to load the bases, but Mura struck out Robinson and got Kurt Mertins to pop out to the catcher to end the rally and send the game to extra innings.
Henry Barrera followed Gutierrez with two scoreless innings and went back out to the mound for the tenth. With one out, Dorn doubled to the alley in right-center and was replaced by pinch-runner Antone DeJesus. Garcia advanced DeJesus to third with a groundout to bring up Marmol who hit a bounding ball up the middle that made it into center field for a hit and an RBI. Barrera (2-1) got Jose Ramirez to groundout to end the inning, but ended up with his first loss of the season. Mura (7-0) finished the tenth inning for the win despite getting his first blown save of the season. Luis Castillo reached on an error with one out in the bottom of the tenth inning, but Mura got Bianchi to hit into a double play to end the game.
The Bees and Swing wrap up this short two-game series tomorrow night in the Bees' final home game of the season. LH Everett Teaford (5-8, 4.73) will get the start for the Bees against RH Elvis Hernandez (6-9, 4.22) for the Swing.
