Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The St. Louis Cardinals transferred 2007 free agent Matt Spade to Quad Cities on Tuesday morning, giving the Swing a lefty in the bullpen while placing Armando Carrasco on the suspended list.
Spade, a southpaw out of Richland College in Texas, was signed by the Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent on June 14. After going 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA in 12 relief appearances in the Arizona League, he was moved to Johnson City where he posted a 2.25 ERA in nine outings out of the bullpen in the Appalachian League.
The 20-year-old was a two-way player in college, going 11-6 with a 2.25 ERA, 110 strikeouts, and eight complete games in 17 outings (15 starts) on the mound during his sophomore season at Richland. He added a .298 batting average, three homers, and 20 RBI at the plate in 31 games as a first baseman.
Carrasco was having a strong season out of the bullpen for the Swing, going 6-2 with a 2.19 ERA in his first season using a sidearm delivery full-time. The 22-year-old from California did not allow an earned run during a 17-appearance stretch that lasted from April 30 to July 4. Carrasco, who was sporting a 1.47 ERA in the month of August, has racked up 49 strikeouts on the year over 53.1 innings of work.
The Swing of the Quad Cities roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster accompanies this release.
