Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Brandon Segal netted two goals and Paul Szczechura registered two assists, but the Norfolk Admirals (1-6-1-2) fell to the Portland Pirates (6-1-1-0) for the second night in a row, this time by a 5-3 score on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.
Despite out-shooting the Pirates 18-8 in the first period, it was Portland who took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Leading scorer Mark Mancari stashed the rebound of a Tim Kennedy shot past a prone Mike McKenna with 5.5 seconds remaining in the opening frame.
Norfolk knotted the score at 1-1 early in the second stanza. Jay Rosehill sent a shot from the right circle that ricocheted off Pirates netminder Jhonas Enroth and then off a maze of bodies in front of the net before crossing the goal line at 5:26. Rosehill was credited with his first marker of the season.
The Pirates charged back with a pair of goals two minutes apart in the middle of the period. Tim Kennedy finished off a feed from former Admiral Mathieu Darche at 13:48. Colton Fretter then made it 3-1 Portland at 15:24 with a toe-drag deke and a top-shelf shot.
The Admirals capitalized on another lucky bounce just over two minutes later. Paul Szczechura took a shot from the right circle that bounced off Enroth high into the air and into the crease. Brandon Segal found the loose puck and stashed it into the net at 17:55.
Norfolk leveled the score at 3-3 just 2:48 into the third period. Szczechura entered the attacking zone at the right point and dropped a pass for Segal. Segal then sent a blistering slap shot past the right leg of Enroth for his second goal of the night.
The Pirates took the lead for good when Darche's slap shot from the right circle snuck past McKenna at 6:51. Felix Schutz closed out scoring at 11:47 for a 5-3 Portland win.
Mike McKenna (30 shots, 25 saves) got the loss. Jhonas Enroth (38 shots, 35 saves) got the win.
Norfolk was 0-7 on the power play. Portland was 0-4.
