Hungry Wolves split series with Chops with 3-1 win on Saturday
November 1, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release
A hungry and determined Chicago Wolves team weren't going to leave Des Moines empty handed, as they defeated the Iowa Chops Saturday night 3-1 to earn a series split and regain their two point advantage in the standings over the Chops. The Wolves were hungry from the start, outshooting Iowa 14-6 in the 1st period. The Wolves struck first with a goal from Riley Holzaphel, but the Chops were able to tie the game late thanks to a goal from behind the net from Andrew Ebbett, who banked it off of Wolves goalie Dan Turple, who was making his first start of his AHL career. Iowa Chops goaltender David LeNeveu kept his team in the game throughout with several big saves, but the Wolves regained the lead with the only goal of the 2nd period from Grant Stevenson, who wrapped home a shot from behind the net. Any idea of a comeback in the 3rd period for the Chops was put out by several sprawling saves from Turple and a season-low three shots on net for the Chops in the final stanza. With LeNeveu pulled for the extra attacker the Chops tried to mount a last-minute attack, but an empty net goal from Joe Motzko sealed the Chops fate. Bobby Ryan and Brennan Evans posted assists for the Chops on Ebbett's goal. The Iowa Chops went 0 for 6 on the power play marking the first time in six games they haven't scored at least one power play goal. The Iowa Chops penalty kill had a strong night going 5 for 5 and have now killed off their last 15 penalty chances without allowing a power play goal. LeNeveu stopped 29 of 31 Wolves shots, but suffered his fourth loss of the season.
The Iowa Chops return to game action on Friday, November 7th as they travel to Moline, Illinois to take on the Quad City Flames in their lone game of the weekend. The Chops return to home ice on Tuesday, November 11th to face the San Antonio Rampage at 7:05pm at the Wells Fargo Arena.
