Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - One night after the Norfolk Admirals (24-37-2-5) came out on top, the Portland Pirates (41-21-2-4) returned volley with a 5-3 victory on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena to end the season series between the seafaring teams at two wins apiece. Adam Henrich, Justin Keller and Kyle Wanvig each had a goal and an assist for Norfolk.
Portland took a 1-0 lead with a power play goal 5:35 into the game. Tyler Bouck poked a rebound that laid in the crease between the leg pads of Admirals goaltender Marc Denis into the net.
The Admirals tied the game at 1-1 late in the first period. Henrich skated around a defender from the right faceoff circle into the slot and sent a wrist shot that beat Portland goaltender Mike McKenna along the ice at 17:11.
The Pirates fired back with two quick goals midway through the second stanza. Bouck entered the attacking zone with speed down the right wing and hit the brakes in the corner before threading a pass to the bottom of the right circle. The pass was re-directed by Jason King past Denis at 12:58.
Forty seconds later, Michal Birner sent a wrist shot from the right circle that made its way through Denis' leg pads at 13:38.
The Admirals answered back to draw within one goal of the Pirates just over a minute later. Wanvig sent a slap shot from the right faceoff circle that bounced off McKenna to Henrich. Henrich chipped it high and over the net where Wanvig collected the rebound and stuffed a wraparound shot past McKenna's right leg at 14:44.
Former Admiral Bruno St. Jacques re-established the Portland two-goal lead 1:14 into the final frame. Drew Miller dropped a pass from the top of the left circle to St. Jacques at the left point, and St. Jacques fired a slap shot through traffic and into the net.
Portland stretched their lead to 5-2 just less than six minutes later when Bouck one-timed a drop pass from the low slot past Denis at 7:05.
Justin Keller closed out scoring on the evening when he backhanded a Chris Lawrence rebound past McKenna at 17:45.
Marc Denis (23 shots, 18 saves) picked up the loss. Jonathan Boutin stopped all four shots he saw in relief and did not receive a decision. Mike McKenna (25 shots, 22 saves) picked up the win.
Norfolk was 0-4 on the power play. Portland was 1-5.
