Tables Are Turned As Stars Fall To Flames 5-2
March 15, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release
The Iowa Stars took on a fired up Flames team on pink ice at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday night in front of 8309 fans, less than 24 hours after taking the Flames 7th spot in the division with a 4-1 win on Friday; the outcome was quite the opposite however as the Stars fell 5-2.
The Flames scored first on a penalty shot awarded to Grant Stevenson when he was hooked on a breakaway by Trevor Byrne. Stevenson beat Stars goaltender Tobias Stephan low glove-side for the point.
The Stars would finish the first with just 6 shots on goal and 0 for 2 on the power play. Quad City was 0 for 2 on the power play as well but with 15 shots on goal.
The Stars went into the second intermission after managing only four shots on goal in the second period. The Flames came out strong in the third with a goal by Kris Kolanos just 1:22 into the period, assisted by David Van der Gulik.
Marty Sertich brought the Stars back in it when he found the back of the net off a pass from Konstantin Pushkarev just over three minutes later. The Stars evened the score when Francis Wathier scored his second goal in his second home game of the season with assists going to Tom Wandell and Bryce Lampman. Lampman also had an assist on the Sertich goal which earned him third star of the night honors.
With the score tied at two the 8309 fans in attendance began a wave and chanting, "Let's go Stars!"
The score would not stay even for long, however. The Flames forward, Kris Chucko, scored the game-winner from behind the net with just under 7:00 to go in the game. Van der Gulik added an insurance marker at 15:28 and another empty net goal with under two minutes remaining.
Both the Stars and the Flames were 0-4 on the power play, but the Flames outshot the Stars 39-18 for the night. The Stars will head back on the road Friday to face the Milwaukee Admirals.
