Pirates Edge Monarchs In Exhibition Play

BIDDEFORD, ME - Matt Libby's one goal and one assist effort helped lead the Portland Pirates past the Manchester Monarchs, 3-2, on Wednesday at the Biddeford Ice Arena in Biddeford, Maine.

Scott Pellerin, a veteran of well over 500 NHL contests, opened the scoring for Portland with a first period power play goal. Colin Forbes and Matt Libby assisted on the only goal scored by either team in the first period.

After a scoreless second period, the Monarchs Yanick Lehoux tied the game with a goal 3:45 into the third period. Pavel Rosa and Brad Church assisted on the play.

Libby and defenseman Chris Hajt were credited with Portland goals at 9:01 and 12:50 of the third period, stretching the Pirates lead to 3-1. Graham Mink assisted on both scores.

The Monarchs pulled to within one goal when Noah Clarke re-directed Jason Maleyko's shot at 13:53. But, they were unable to come up with the equalizer against goaltender Rastislav Stana, who finished with 29 saves.

The Monarchs outshot the Pirates 15-6 in the third period, and 31-24 in the game.

Monarchs goaltender Matt Underhill worked the first 30 minutes of the contest, stopping 16 of the 17 shots he faced. Goaltender Adam Hauser replaced him midway through the second period, and remained in goal until he was pulled with 54 seconds remaining in the third period. Hauser finished with five saves.

The Monarchs (0-1-0-0 in exhibition play) resume their exhibition schedule when they travel to Winter Garden Arena in Ridgefield, Connecticut, to face the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Saturday, October 4 at 4:00 p.m.

The Monarchs open their third AHL season at the Verizon Wireless Arena against the Worcester IceCats on Friday, October 10 at 7:35 p.m. They will also host the Lowell Lock Monsters on Saturday, October 11 at 7:35 p.m. and the Portland Pirates on Wednesday, October 15 at 7:05 p.m. For individual or season ticket information, visit the Monarchs on-line at www.monarchshockey.com or call (603) 626-7825.
