Charlotte Checkers News Release
(Charlotte, NC - Wednesday, October 1, 2003) The Charlotte Checkers made their first player signings of the 2003-04 season Wednesday by inking four players to contracts, headlined by veteran center Allan Egeland. Central Hockey League veteran right wing, Blaz Emersic, rugged defenseman Doug MacIver, and rookie forward Dustin Kingston are also new Checkers. The announcement is made today by Checkers Head Coach / General Manager Don MacAdam. The signings are the first for the Checkers, who were prohibited from inking players until the ECHL and Professional Hockey Players Association came to a Collective Bargaining Agreement. That took place late Tuesday, so the Checkers now have free reign to sign players.
Egeland was the Checkers captain last season, and finished second on the team in scoring with 20 goals, 41 assists for 61 points and a +/- of -5. He also finishes third on the club with 191 penalty minutes with 191, was one of only two Checkers to play in all 72 games. "It's nice to come back to an organization you're familiar with, and especially a first-class organization like the Checkers," remarked Egeland. "Charlotte is a great city and the fans are some of the best in the league. I couldn't be happier." Egeland will be starting his 1st professional season and also has 17 National Hockey League games to his credit.
MacAdam commented on his first signee of the 2003-04 season. "Allan was our captain last season and did a terrific job in that role. He's a leader on and off the ice and gives us nine seasons of pro experience in our lineup."
