PORTLAND, ME - Paul Byron, Luke Adam and Colin Stuart each recorded two goals and the Portland Pirates scored five times on the power play en route to an 8-3 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Saturday night. With the win, Portland improves to 36-17-5-2. The Sound Tigers fall to 21-33-3-4.
Portland began the scoring 7:43 into the first period. Following a holding penalty to Benn Olson, Mark Parrish held the puck in the by the left faceoff circle in Sound Tigers zone and found Paul Byron alone in the slot. Byron fired a shot past Koskinen for his 16th goal of the season and the Pirates held a 1-0 first-period lead.
A great individual effort from Jeremy Colliton led to Eric Castonguay's game-tying goal 3:27 into the second period. Colliton picked off a clearing attempt by the Pirates left faceoff circle, avoided a check and slid the puck to Castonguay in the slot who roofed the puck over David Leggio's glove for his fifth of the season to tie the game at one. However, Portland would strike quickly with two goals to retake the lead. As Paul Byron's slashing penalty expired midway through the period, he came out of the box, skated past Benn Olson along the right side and lifted the puck over Koskinen's glove to give Portland a 2-1 lead at 9:14 of the second. Just 22 seconds later, Koskinen found himself out of position and Luke Adam scored from the slot to increase the Pirates lead to 3-1.
Portland continued its power-play success as T.J Brennan's blast from the point during a 4-on-3 beat Koskinen at 11:58 to make the score 4-1. The Sound Tigers responded less than two minutes later when Colliton made another gorgeous feed, this time to David Ullstrom after drawing Leggio out of the net, and the rookie center scored his 13th goal of the season on a wide open net as their power play expired to cut the deficit to 4-2 with 6:25 left in the second period. Portland answered quickly as Colin Stuart scored Portland's third power-play goal of the game at 16:43 of the middle frame, and after two period of play the Pirates held a 5-2 lead.
The Sound Tigers struck quickly in the third to reduce the deficit to two when Rhett Rakhshani buried a rebound on a 5-on-3 power play to make the score 5-3 41 seconds into the period, but that's as close as they would come. Stuart added his second goal of the game just two minutes after Rakhshani's tally, Adam followed with his second at 8:56 and Derek Whitmore rounded out the scoring at 10:14 of the third as Portland came away with a decisive 8-3 win.
The Sound Tigers return to action tomorrow afternoon with a Sunday matinee against the Providence Bruins at the Dunkin' Donuts Center at 4:05 p.m.
