Pirates Offense Erupts Against Sound Tigers

Portland, ME - Paul Byron, Colin Stuart, and Luke Adam each netted two goals and the Pirates offense capitalized on five power plays to lead Portland to an 8-3 victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in an American Hockey League game played this evening in front of 5,269 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

T.J. Brennan and Derek Whitmore also scored and Mark Parrish registered four assists as Portland improved their record to 36-17-5-2. With the victory, the Pirates improved their American Hockey League best home record to 20-4-4-1 and moved within four points of the idle division leading Manchester Monarchs.

Eric Castonguay, David Ullstrom, and Rhett Rakhshani each contributed goals for Bridgeport as they lost their fourth straight and fell to 21-33-3-4 on the season.

Byron scored the first power-play goal of the game in the first period to give the Pirates a lead that they would only give up once throughout the game. Fireworks went off in the second period as both teams combined for six goals, starting with Castonguay tying the game for Bridgeport at 3:27. Portland would begin their offensive onslaught as Byron and Adam connected only 12 seconds apart midway through the period, and Brennan scored on a power-play two minutes later at 11:58. Bridgeport's Ullstrom cut the lead to two on a power-play goal of his own, but Stuart again extended the lead to three for the Pirates to close out the second period scoring. In the first minute of the third period, Rakhshani tallied Bridgeport's second power-play and final goal of the game followed by Stuart scoring his second of the game at the 2:58 mark. Adam and Whitmore closed out the scoring for the Pirates with a power-play goal each.

The Sound Tigers out-shot the Pirates 37-30 as David Leggio won his seventh straight decision, improving his record to 16-4-0 with 34 saves. Mikko Koskinen took the loss for Bridgeport as his record dropped to 7-18-1.
