Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT â The American Hockey League's 2001-02 Regular Season Champion and Eastern Conference Playoff Champion Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, were defeated by the Philadelphia Phantoms 4-1 at home on Saturday. Right Wing Kirby Law led the Phantoms with a hat trick as Bridgeport lost their second consecutive game at home.
Philadelphia's Jack Baker opened the scoring with his second goal of the season at 17:41 of the first period. Phantoms' scoring leader Mark Greig assisted on the goal.
Philadelphia took a 2-0 lead on a fluke goal at 3:07 of the second period. Sound Tigers' Goaltender Rick DiPietro attempted to clear the puck while on the power play, but his pass bounced off the skate of teammate Sven Butenschon into the Bridgeport net. Kirby Law was credited with the shorthanded, unassisted goal; his seventh goal of the season.
Matt Higgins put the Sound Tigers on the board with his sixth goal of the season, a shorthanded tally, at 15:27 of the third period on an assist by Justin Mapletoft.
However, Law notched his second goal of the game, his eighth of the year, just :38 later, a power-play goal, from Ben Stafford and Ian MacNeil. Bridgeport pulled DiPietro with 1:38 remaining in favor of an extra attacker, but Law completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal, his ninth goal of the season, at 19:46 from MacNeil and Stafford.
The Sound Tigers were 0 for 6 on the power play while Philadelphia was 1 for 7. The Phantoms also had a 29-27 shots on goal advantage. Philadelphia Netminder Matthew Yeats, playing his first AHL game, was the number one star of the game. Law was the number two star. Baker was the number three star.
The Sound Tigers will embark on a six-game road trip starting in Albany tomorrow at 4 p.m. against the River Rats. They will then travel to Texas for four games starting with their first-ever meeting with the expansion San Antonio Rampage Tuesday at 8 p.m. The Sound Tigers will also visit the Houston Aeros Thursday at 8 p.m. and Friday at 8:30 p.m., as well as a second meeting with San Antonio Saturday at 8 p.m. The road trip will end Wednesday December 18th at 7 p.m. with a rematch of last year's Eastern Conference semi-finals with the Hamilton Bulldogs.
