Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC – December 7, 2002 - The Checkers tied a club record with their sixth straight loss Saturday night at Cricket Arena falling to the Greensboro Generals 5-3. Vlad Serov scored twice for Greensboro and goalie Daniel Berthiaume made 38 saves as the Generals won for the sixth time in their last seven games. Charlotte outshot the Generals 41-27, and for the second straight night the Checkers outshot their opponents by a wide margin only to lose the game.

"We seem to find a different way to lose each night," said Checkers Head Coach Don MacAdam. "We played very poorly in the first period tonight, but I was glad to see the guys play well in the last two periods and come back to make a game of it."

The Checkers fell behind 1-0 after one period on Serov's first of two on the night. In the second period Greensboro scored a power-play goal, a short-handed goal and an even-strength goal to take a 4-0 lead despite being outshot 19-9 in the frame. The Checkers mounted a comeback in the final period as Takahito Suzuki, Vince Malts and Kurt Seher scored to draw the Checkers to within one at 4-3 with 6:54 left. Charlotte had several scoring opportunities in the final six minutes of the game but was unable to cash in. Jay Murphy scored an empty-net goal with 16 seconds left to seal the victory for the Generals.

The win improved Greensboro's record to 14-5-4 for 32 points, and pulled the Generals to within two points of first place Atlantic City in the Northeast Division. The loss dropped Charlotte's record to five games under .500 at 7-12-1 for 15 points. The Checkers will close out a three-game in three-day weekend on Sunday afternoon in Florence, SC with a 2:30 pm face-off with the Pee Dee Pride.

NOTES: The Checkers Dusty Jamieson saw his six game point scoring streak snapped Saturday night as he was blanked. .......Goalie Bryce Wandler was a healthy scratch for the second straight night.
