Pettit Pitches Past R-Phils
June 25, 2012 - Eastern League (EL1)
Bowie Baysox News Release
Bowie, Md. - The Baysox used two home runs to score all of their runs in a 3-1 win over the Reading Phillies Monday evening. The win gave the Baysox the series win over the R-Phils.
Baysox left-handed starting pitcher Jake Pettit pitched six shut out innings, allowing three hits while striking out five batters and walking one in the win.
"I felt good tonight," Pettit said. "My command of my inside fastball was on and I was on the same page as the catcher so everything just kind of worked tonight. My changeup was really good and I was able to throw that wherever I wanted to for strikes."
The Baysox struck first in the bottom of the second inning against Reading starting pitcher Trevor May. With one out, third baseman Zelous Wheeler hit a solo home run over the left field fence to give the team a 1-0 lead.
Bowie added to its lead in the bottom of the third inning. Shortstop Manny Machado drew a one out walk and first baseman Brandon Waring followed with a two-run home run into the trees in left-center field to give the Baysox a 3-0 lead. It was Waring's second home run in as many games and his team leading 11th home run of the season.
"It seems like when I hit home runs they come in bunches," Waring said. "So I just keep the same approach looking for a good pitch to drive and right now I am hitting it. We have a good lineup one through nine - there are a lot of experienced guys who know what they are doing at the plate so we give tough outs every time at the plate and that wears on a pitcher."
Reading broke up the Baysox shut out in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Kyler Newby. Tim Kennelly hit a one out double to left field and moved to third base after a passed ball by catcher Brian Ward. Kennelly scored on a single to right field by Cesar Hernandez to make the score 3-1.
Newby pitched two innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out two batters. Making his Double-A debut, Baysox reliever Clay Schrader pitched the ninth inning and allowed one hit to earn his first save of the season.
"I just came in and wanted to throw strikes," Schrader said. "The first pitch was right there and the ump didn't call it and I was just thinking to myself, 'man, the zone is a lot tighter up here.' Then I started throwing strikes and I got out of the inning."
May took the loss for Reading, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven batters and walking three.
The Baysox depart Tuesday for Binghamton to begin an eight game road trip and the team returns home Wednesday, July 4 to begin a six game home stand that includes an Independence Day Celebration and Tats and Bats Night.
