Game #74 - Monday, June 25, 2012

Jerry Uht Park - Erie, PA - 7:05 PM

LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets held off a late rally and defeated the Erie SeaWolves by a 7-5 score Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park. Robert Carsoncapped a five-out save by striking out Jordan Lennerton, stranding the potential game-tying run at first. Wilmer Floresdrove in two runs and collected a pair of doubles in a four-hit game. The contest saw 22 combined hits and clocked in at three hours, twenty-two minutes, the longest nine-inning B-Mets game of the season. Flores broke a tie game and gave Binghamton the lead for good in the third with a two-run double to right center. The B-Mets added three more runs against the Erie bullpen, highlighted by solo home runs from Pedro Zapata and Reese Havens. After spot starter Armando Rodriguez allowed three runs in three innings, Erik Turgeon and Ryan Fraser combined for four shutout innings of relief. Carson inherited the bases loaded from Adrian Rosario and left them full in the eighth. The lefty allowed an unearned run in the ninth to collect his sixth win.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Zack Wheeler (6-3, 1.88) makes his 13th start of the season and second against the SeaWolves. Wheeler took a hard-luck loss in his last start against the Akron Aeros on June 20. A pair of defensive misplays resulted in two runs (one earned) during his six innings on the hill. He struck out three in a game in which the B-Mets were shutout 2-0. The B-Mets had been 7-0 in Wheeler's last seven starts before their loss to the Aeros. The righty earned his first Double-A win against Erie on April 29. He surrendered just one run on two hits over 5.2 innings. The victory started a six-game winning streak for the Georgia native.

RHP James Avery (8-5, 3.36) makes his team-leading 15th start of the season and third against the B-Mets. The righty is on a three-game winning streak, having defeated the Bowie Baysox in his previous start on June 20. He allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits, including two home runs, over eight innings. In two starts versus Binghamton, Avery has gone 2-0 with a 0.77 ERA. He has struck out seven and walked six over 11.2 innings and held the B-Mets to a .125 batting average. All five hits allowed have been singles. He was signed by the Detroit Tigers as a minor league free agent in January 2012.

OUT-HIT, NOT OUT-SCORED: The B-Mets were out-hit by a 12-10 tally in yesterday's game. It was just the fourth time this season they have won a game while being out-hit. Binghamton had lost their last 14 games when being out-hit. Their last win when losing the battle of hits came on May 16 when they defeated the Trenton Thunder 1-0, while being out-hit 7-5.

SEE YA, JERRY: Tonight marks the B-Mets final game at Jerry Uht Park this season. They have already secured a winning record in Erie in 2012 and are looking for their ninth win in their last 11 games at this venue.

A BIT AT STAKE: Binghamton completes their nine-game roadtrip, their longest of the season, tonight in Erie. They have gone 4-4 to start the trek. A win tonight would also secure Binghamton's first four-game road series win since they took three of four from the New Hampshire Fisher Cats from May 10-13.

FLOR-ING IT: B-Mets infielder Wilmer Flores has wasted little time getting comfortable at Double-A. Promoted from St. Lucie (High-A) on June 21, Flores has already racked up eight hits in four games. He has produced at least one RBI in each of his games and compiled a four-hit game last night.

EARNING THE "W": B-Mets reliever Ryan Fraser allowed one hit over two scoreless innings yesterday and was given the official scorer-awarded win. It was his first win at the Double-A level. Fraser went 3-2 with a 2.08 ERA in 19 relief appearances with the St. Lucie Mets (High-A) before getting promoted on June 6.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets head back to the Southern Tier to start an eight-game homestand, welcoming in the Bowie Baysox and Altoona Curve. Their four-game set against Bowie, the Baltimore Orioles affiliate, begins tomorrow night at 6:35 PM.
