B-Mets Slug Past SeaWolves in Finale, 11-5
June 25, 2012 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
ERIE, PA - The Binghamton Mets matched a season-high with 18 hits and plated at least one run in all but three innings to defeat the Erie SeaWolves 11-5 Monday night at Jerry Uht Park. Wilfredo Tovar tied a career-high with four hits to lead the B-Mets to their fifth victory in six games. The club finished 5-4 on the nine-game roadtrip, their longest of the season.
After losing to Erie starter James Avery twice already this season, the B-Mets exacted their revenge against the righty. Avery was tagged for a career-high 13 hits and surrendered eight runs (seven runs) in 4.1 innings of work.
The B-Mets jumped out to a six-run edge over the first three innings. Dustin Martin gave Binghamton the lead by shooting a bases-loaded, two-run single through the hole on the right side in the first inning. Reese Havens doubled the lead by crushing a two-run home run in the second inning. It was his fifth home run of the season; three have been hit at Jerry Uht Park. Wilfredo Tovar made it 6-0 with a two-run single in the third.
B-Mets starter Zack Wheeler used the healthy lead and cruised through the first three innings facing the minimum, but hit a speed bump in the fourth. After a walk to leadoff hitter Jamie Johnson, Niuman Romero ripped a run-scoring double to right. Following a wild pitch, Nick Castellanos cut the lead to four with a sac fly.
Binghamton had a quick rebuttal in the fifth. Martin started the inning with a stand-up triple, zipping one down the right field line. Francisco Pena brought him home with a double to left and scored two batters later when Pedro Zapata beat out a potential double play.
After a scoreless fifth, Wheeler battled through two more innings to cap his night. The righty allowed two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh, but exited with Binghamton owning an 8-5 lead having allowed eight hits over seven innings of work.
The B-Mets offense never took their foot off the gas pedal, padding their lead with three more runs over the final two innings against relievers Jared Gayhart and Kenny Faulk.
Edgar Ramirez took over in the eighth and easily took the game to the finish line; tossing a perfect eighth before working around a leadoff single in a shutout ninth.
Despite allowing a season-high eight hits and five runs, Wheeler (7-3) collected the victory. Avery (8-6) suffered the loss, snapping his three-game winning streak.
The B-Mets (36-38) kick off an eight-game homestand by welcoming in the Bowie Baysox for a four-game series. The set begins Tuesday night at 6:35 PM at NYSEG Stadium. RHP Cory Mazzoni starts for Binghamton against LHP Richard Zagone. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
