Reading Fightin Phils News Release
Reading Phillies starter Jonathan Pettibone was announced as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 18th through June 24th by the Eastern League on Monday. New Britain outfielder Evan Bigley was also selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week.
Through the past week, Pettibone was 1-0 with 15 strikeouts and a 1.29 ERA in two starts with the Reading Phillies. In his first appearance against Akron in Reading's morning game on June 18, Pettibone surrendered two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out a season-high eight batters. While he was in line for the winning decision prior to exiting the game in the eighth inning, he wound up with the no-decision in the 4-3, extra-innings victory.
His next start came at Bowie on Saturday, June 23 in the opening game of a twi-night doubleheader where Pettibone hurled a seven-inning complete game. In the second complete game of his career, the Yorba Linda, California native struck out seven and walked two while yielding one run on three hits.
Over the weeklong period, Pettibone led all Eastern League pitchers in strikeouts (15) and innings pitched (14.0).
Through 15 starts in 2012, Pettibone is 7-5 with 63 strikeouts and a 3.27 ERA. The right-handed pitcher currently ranks second in the Eastern League in innings pitched (93.2) and leads the league in total batters faced (396) and at-bats against (362).
Drafted in 2008 between the third and fourth rounds out of Esperanza High School, Pettibone is in his fifth year of professional baseball. Last season with Clearwater (A+), he went 10-11 with a 2.96 ERA and 115 strikeouts over a Florida State League-leading 161.0 innings pitched. Pettibone also was tied for second in the league in starts (27) and fifth in ERA. He was named the fourth-best prospect in the Phillies minor league system by Baseball America.
