SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Louisville Bats defeated the Syracuse Chiefs 5-3 Wednesday night. Short stop Juan Perez hit a solo home run, and left handed pitcher Cody Reed earned the win with a strong finish to his outing. Louisville moves back to a game over .500 at 30-29.

The Bats got things started in the first, and nearly had a big inning. With two outs, left fielder Scott Schebler hit a towering home run to right field on the first pitch he saw, giving Louisville a 1-0 lead. The Bats were able to load the bases after the home run, but were unable to bring in any more runs.

Syracuse responded quickly, as they tied it up just two batters into the bottom of the first, thanks to an error and a pair of singles, and it was 1-1 after an inning.

The Chiefs pounced again two innings later when first baseman Matt Skole and left fielder Matt den Dekker hit back-to-back solo home runs, making it 3-1 in favor of the home team.

In the top of the fourth, Perez launched a solo home run of his own, his fourth of the season, and it brought the Bats within one, 3-2.

Reed helped his own cause in the sixth. With two outs and runners on second and third, Reed collected his second career base hit, a single to deep short, which allowed Winker to score and tie the game, 3-3.

In the seventh, the Bats took the lead for good when third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean bounded into an RBI fielder's choice, giving Louisville a 4-3 lead.

Reed (5-3, 3.38) retired the Chiefs in order in the seventh, his final inning of the night. He earned his fifth win of the season, throwing seven innings. He allowed 10 hits and three earned runs, walking two and striking out six.

In the top of the eighth, Schebler worked a bases loaded walk, increasing the Louisville lead to 5-3.

Right handed pitcher Jumbo Diaz worked the ninth inning, collecting his seventh save in as many chances.

The Bats will look for a series split tomorrow night, when Dayan Diaz (2-0, 3.45) will get the start. He will be opposed by Chiefs' right hander Paolo Espino (3-4, 3.39). First pitch in Syracuse is set for 6:35 p.m.
