Kane County Cougars News Release
BELOIT, Wisc. - Leondy Perez pitched 6 2/3 strong innings on Wednesday night to notch his team-best 14th quality start and lead the Kane County Cougars to a 6-1 victory over the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field. Perez has won consecutive starts for the first time this season, and the Cougars have opened up a four-game lead over Clinton for the top 2nd Half playoff spot in the Western Division with 32 games remaining in the season. Beloit is two games back for the Wild Card spot and trails the Cougars by six games for the top spot.
Perez (4-11) gave up one unearned run in the second inning, and that turned out to be the Snappers' only run of the night. Perez gave up six hits, walked two -- his final two hitters of the outing -- and fanned seven in the win. He now has logged 122 1/3 innings this season and walked just 23, the lower walk rate among starting pitchers in the Midwest League. Alex Rivers, who joined the team Tuesday, worked the final 2 1/3 innings to get a save in his Cougars debut.
The Cougars tied the game and took the lead in the third against A.J. Achter (3-5). Cheslor Cuthbert nailed an RBI double, and then he and Brian Fletcher scored on a two-out throwing error by Jairo Perez for a 3-1 score. Brett Eibner smashed a two-run double in the seventh off Blayne Weller to make it 5-1, and Eibner scored on an passed ball in the ninth against Nelvin Fuentes for the 6-1 final. The Cougars improved to 9-3 against Beloit this season and 6-0 at Pohlman Field. The Cougars (23-15, 51-56) and Snappers (17-21, 55-53) play Game 3 of the four-game set Thursday night at 7 CT.
