Cleveland Barons News Release
CLEVELAND, OH -- Two power play goals from the Barons wasn?t enough on Saturday afternoon in a 3-2 loss to Peoria. The Barons losing stretch has now hit eight games at 0-7-1-0, including five straight losses at home.
For the 12th time in the last 14-games the Barons surrendered the contest?s opening goal. Peoria?s newest member, Timofei Shishkanov, registered his 17th of the season at 12:42 of the first period. Dimitri Patzold, who?s last win was against Peoria on January 7th, faced eight shots in the period, getting beat by the Shishkanov wrister to his stick side. Mike Mottau assisted on the period?s only goal. Reinhard Divis made his 15th appearance of the season and second against the Barons. With two fisticuffs in the opening period the teams combined for 24 minutes in penalties.
The Rivermen converted their only power play chance of the second period extending their lead to 2-0 through forty minutes. Brendan Brooks? deflected a slap shot from Jeff Woywitka past Patzold while on the power play for the two-goal advantage. The Barons were held to just four shots-on-goal in the period in a 10-4 shots-on-goal margin for Peoria.
Once again the Barons battled from behind, but fell short. Ryane Clowe and Mike Iggulden scored power play goals for the Barons tying the game at 2-2, before Peoria?s game-winner occurred with 40-seconds to go in regulation time. Clowe?s ninth of the year was assisted by Josh Hennessy and Patrick Rissmiller just 16-seconds into the final frame trimming the lead to 2-1. Tim Conboy and Tom Cavanagh then set up Iggulden for his 14th of the year with 5:40 remaining in the game. Overtime looked inevitable until Trent Whitfield slid home the game-winning goal while on a two-on-one break into the offensive zone. The goal by Whitfield was his 15th of the year.
The Barons nine-game home stand continues with games at National City Rink Thursday and Friday night at 7 O?clock. Thursday night is a pivotal North Division match up against the Toronto Marlies. Friday night the first 3,000 fans will receive a FREE authentically autographed action photo of Barons defenseman Garrett Stafford prior to the Barons third meeting of the year against the Chicago Wolves. Friday night fans can bring their skates for a post-game skate with the Barons players. Ticket information for both games is available at the Barons official web site, www.clevelandbarons.net.
