Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria, IL (November 4, 2005) - On Friday night in Peoria, it was a different game but the same result for the Rivermen, as they put together a 2-0 shutout of the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights. The whitewash was the third straight and the fourth in the last five games for Peoria. Jason Bacashihua had been in net for the previous two Rivermen shutouts, but Curtis Sanford was between the pipes for this one. Right wing Colin Hemingway served as the offensive star for Peoria with a goal and an assist, and the Rivermen winning streak grew to five games with the triumph.
Rivermen goaltender Curtis Sanford made 28 saves in this contest to earn his second shutout of the season. In his first start since blanking the Manitoba Moose 4-0 back on Friday, October 21, Sanford faced eight shots from the Omaha club in the opening period and stopped them all. The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights squeezed off 11 shots on goal in the second period and then nine more in the third, but they never found the back of the net with any of them.
With this 2-0 result, the Rivermen extended their winning streak to five games and pushed their overall record to 9-2-0-0. The Peoria squad is now 5-1-0-0 at home in Carver Arena.
Rivermen right wing Colin Hemingway broke through for the game's first goal, but not until the third period. Early in the third, he took the puck at the blueline and skated into the Omaha zone on the right wing. Finding no option in the middle of the ice to his liking, Hemingway skated all the way around the end boards to the left side of the rink, where he wheeled and slung the puck along the ice from the left wing half-boards toward the goal. Amazingly, the puck slid through the legs of several players and then eluded Omaha goaltender Brent Krahn to stake Peoria to a 1-0 lead at 1:51 of the third period.
Just over one minute later, Hemingway was involved with the second Rivermen goal. Stationed at the right point, Hemingway ripped a waist-high shot at the Omaha net, and winger Mike Glumac deflected the puck enough at about the hash marks to get it by Krahn at the 3:05 mark of the third period for the final 2-0 score.
The Rivermen and the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights will square off once more on Saturday evening at Carver Arena.
