Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - One night after allowing seven runs in the eighth inning to lose a lead against the Swing of the Quad Cities, the Kane County Cougars took their turn to fight back. They scored six times in the eighth to turn a three-run deficit into a three-run lead and then held for an 8-6 win at Elfstrom Stadium. Cliff Pennington had four hits, including the game-tying three-run home run.
The Cougars had stranded 11 base runners through the first seven innings but erupted in the eighth against reliever Bo Dickerson. Trailing 5-2, Ryan Ruiz reached on an error, and Gregorio Petit singled to set up Pennington's three-run shot for a 5-5 score. Then Myron Leslie doubled, and Tommy Everidge was walked intentionally. Jose Pineda singled to score Leslie, who stopped at third but came in to produce a 6-5 lead when the ball got away from Eric Verbryke in left field. Javier Herrera made it 8-5 with a pinch-hit, two-run double and gave reliever Dan Fyvie the win for Kane County.
Quad Cities got three runs early against Cougars starter Joe Scott, who worked five innings, allowed four runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out three. Leslie got the Cougars on the board in the second with a bases-loaded walk from Mark McCormick, and Pennington singled, stole two bases and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth for a 3-2 deficit. Quad Cities scored in the fifth and eighth for the 5-2 mark that evaporated during the rally in the bottom half.
Fyvie (1-0) got the win after Tomas Cabaniel worked 2 2/3 innings ahead of him. Dickerson (2-2) took the loss for Quad Cities. The Cougars (18-20) head to Peoria for a game Tuesday night at 7 CDT. Ryan Ford (9-6, 4.51) will pitch against Chiefs right-hander Grant Johnson (2-4, 4.06). Chicago Cubs right-hander Kerry Wood, on a rehabilitation stint with Peoria, is expected to pitch at least one relief inning against the Cougars.
