August 1, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

August 1, 2005 - The Kernels won for the third straight game as eight batters collected hits in a 10-3 victory over Dayton in front of 2,461 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Freddy Sandoval was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI and Josh LeBlanc drove in three with a three-hit night as the Kernels improved to 18-20 while taking three games out of four from the visiting Dragons.

Wasting little time the Kernels got on the board with a two-run first inning when LeBlanc drove in a pair of runs with a single to right off Dayton starter Camilo Vazquez. The Kernels then added seven more runs in the second frame to put the game well out of reach.

Nate Sutton began the second with a bunt single to third and moved to second on a throwing error by Trevor Lawhorn. He moved to third on a fly out by Chris Walston before scoring on a single by Richard Giannotti. Alexi Casilla then extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a double that moved Giannotti to third. Sandoval then smacked a base hit to left to bring in Giannotti before Casilla scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Collins. Sandoval moved to second and scored on a single by Drew Toussaint, who took second on the throw. LeBlanc then drove in Toussaint with an RBI single before waltzing home when Sean Rodriguez belted his seventh home run of the season, a deep shot to left off Vazquez.

Starter Ronnie Ray allowed just one Dayton run - an RBI double by Adam Rosales in the third - and worked six innings of six-hit ball to win for the second time as a starter and improve to 4-1 on the year.

Dayton touched up reliever Francis Abreu for two runs in the seventh inning on three hits and a Kernel error but it was too little too late as Casey Mutter and Joe Torres combined to shutout the Dragons over the final two innings of play.

The Kernels also scored one run in the sixth when a liner by Toussaint allowed Sandoval to come home.

Only Collins, the team's leading hitter, didn't reach safely via a hit on Monday night as the Kernels combined for 13 safeties in their triumph over the Dragons. Collins was second in the league in hitting with a .335 average entering Monday night's game.

Vazquez took the loss for the beleaguered Dragons, lasting just 1 2/3 innings and giving up nine runs on eight hits. Three Dayton relievers combined to limit the Kernels to just one run and five hits over the game's final 6 1/3 innings.

The Kernels, who stand just three games out of the final second half playoff spot in the Western Division, kick off an eight-game road trip to Southwest Michigan and Wisconsin with the first of four games in Battle Creek Tuesday night against the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays. The team returns home August 11th.
