Burlington Bees News Release
BURLINGTON, IA -- Wisconsin Timber Rattler relievers Cibney Bello and Jon Lockwood pitched eight scoreless innings to allow the Rattlers to rally from a 4-0 first inning deficit and beat the Burlington Bees 6-4 Monday night at Community Field. Brent Johnson delivered a pinch hit two-run single in the top of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie to drive in the winning runs. Bello gave up one hit and struck out six over five innings. Lockwood worked three perfect innings for his first win as a Timber Rattler.
Burlington (55-53 overall, 21-17 second half) took advantage of two hit batsmen and a walk by Rattler starting pitcher Randy Frye to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Irving Falu drew a walk to start the inning. Ed Lucas was hit by a pitch with one out. An RBI single by Damaso Espino drove in Falu and sent Lucas to third. A sacrifice fly by Brian McFall made the score 2-0 Burlington. Frye hit Geraldo Valentin to put two runners on with two outs. Then, Kenard Springer and Eddie Solis had back-to-back RBI singles to push the Bees out in front 4-0.
The bottom of the second started out with Frye walking the first two batters he faced. He went 2-0 to Lucas and left after a visit to the mound by pitching coach Brad Holman and trainer Jeremy Clipperton.
Bello entered the game and got out of the jam with a strike-'em-out-throw-'em-out double play and another strikeout. The Bees didn't sniff a run the rest of the night.
The Rattlers (60-48, 21-17) got on the board in the top of the third. Omar Falcon led off the inning with a long home run to leftcenter and the Rattlers trailed 4-1.
Wisconsin got another run in the top of the fourth inning. They loaded the bases with two outs on a double by Yung Chi Chen, an error that allowed Matt Tuiasosopo to reach, and a walk to Falcon. Josh Womack singled sharply to right to score Chen. The throw to the plate by McFall beat Tuiasosopo by fifteen feet and the Rattler shortstop tried to jar the ball loose from the catcher. But Espino held on after a violent collision for the final out.
The Rattlers tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Omar Falcon sent foul fly ball down the right field line with the bases loaded. The ball was too shallow for Marshall Hubbard to tag from third, but McFall threw home anyway and threw the ball away. Hubbard scored on the error and the other two runners moved up. Burlington reliever Adam Rowe entered the game and gave up a game tying infield single to Josh Womack.
Wisconsin loaded the bases again in the top of the eighth inning. Johnson, who stepped to the plate without a hit in his last nine at bats, lined a single down the right field line to drive in a pair of runs and the Rattlers had their first lead of the night at 6-4.
Lockwood, who entered the game in the seventh inning finished off the Bees by retiring the side in order in the eighth and ninth.
The Wisconsin bullpen extended their scoreless streak to 22-2/3 innings with the eight shutout innings on Monday.
The Rattlers return home to begin an eight game homestand with the first game of a four game series against the South Bend Silver Hawks on Tuesday night. Julio Santiago (3-2, 5.31ERA) gets the starting pitching assignment for the Rattlers. Ross Ohlendorf (7-8, 4.93ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Silver Hawks. Game time for the "Bang for Your Buck" Night at Fox Cities Stadium is 7:05pm. There will be $1 sodas, $1 hot dogs, and $1 beers available.
