Peoria Chiefs News Release
Ft. Wayne, IN -The Peoria Chiefs scored three in the 9th and withheld a furious rally to beat the Fort Wayne Wizards 5-2 Monday night. With the win the Chiefs have taken seven of eight and improve to 18-20 on the half and 53-55 on the season.
With the game tied 1-1, Ryan Harvey led off the bottom of the 8th with a double to right off reliever Brandon Kintzler. Jesse Schmidt followed with a double off the left-field wall but a strong throw held Harvey at third. Bo Flowers hit a chopper to shortstop and Matt Bush froze both runners but then threw wild to first base. Flowers reached safely as Harvey scored from third for a 2-1 Chiefs lead.
Kintzler walked Anthony Granato and Eric Patterson on eight straight pitches with two outs in the 9th. Harvey then lined a three run homer over the right field fence that just missed the scoreboard for a 5-1 Chiefs lead. The homer was his MWL leading 19th of the season.
Fort Wayne rallied against Adalberto Mendez in the bottom of the 9th but the Chiefs escaped. Back to back singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. After a fly out, Mike Baxter drove a ball into right center but Harvey and Jesse Schmidt miscommunicated and the ball fell for a RBI single. But Mendez recovered to get a strikeout and groundout to end the game.
After five scoreless innings, Flowers gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead with a solo homer with one out in the 6th. The homer, off Wizards starter Joel Santo, was Flowers 7th of the season.
Peoria left single runners on base in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th then left the bases loaded in the 5th inning. After Joe Simokaitis singled, Alan Rick and Granato walked to load the bases with one out. But Santo struck out Patterson and got Harvey to pop out harmlessly to right to end the inning.
The Wizards finally got to Chiefs starter Matt Weber in the 7th inning. With one out, Baudilio Figueroa reached on a broken bat single and Yordany Ramirez blooped a single to left. Josh Alley's seeing-eye single to right loaded the bases for Sean Kazmar. Weber got squeezed on a 2-1 pitch and ended up walking Kazmar to force in the tying run. With the bases still loaded, Tim Layden relieved Weber and struck out Peter Ciofrone before Baxter bounced out to second to end the inning with the score tied 1-1.
Weber took another no-decision with 6 1/3 innings in which he allowed one run on eight hits. The All-Star right-hander struck out three and walked just one. Layden (3-4) threw 1 1/3 hitless innings with a strikeout and a hit batter to pick up the win for the second straight game. Pepsi Player of the Game
