Penguins Shut Down by IceCaps
December 6, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland - Carl Klingberg scored the first two goals of the contest and goaltender Eddie Pasquale gathered his first shutout of the season as the St. John's IceCaps defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 5-0, at Mile One Centre.
St. John's took a 1-0 lead 4:51 before the first intermission when Eric O'Dell's wraparound attempt skittered through the crease and to the right dot, where Klingberg backhanded the loose puck over the shoulder of Eric Hartzell.
Klingberg's second of the game doubled the IceCaps lead at 12:11 of the second period as he found space in the slot to take J.C Lipon's centering pass from the back wall and slap it inside the near post.
Five minutes later while on the power play, St. John's went up by a score of 3-0 with defenseman Zach Redmond floating a wrist shot from the blueline that sailed through a screen and past the blocker of Hartzell.
The IceCaps stretched their lead to five with two more tallies in the third period. Jerome Samson's seemingly-innocent wrister from the near circle clipped off a stick and went flipping into the Penguins' net at 12:30 of the frame.
Andrew Gordon completed the scoring for St. John's, deflecting in a power play goal with 6:25 left in regulation.
Hartzell suffered his first loss of the season for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, stopping 24-of-29 shots. Pasquale made 20 saves in net for the IceCaps.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and St. John's IceCaps face off once again on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 6:00 pm EST. Tune into the Sports Hub 102 or AHL Live.
