St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - Carl Klingberg scored two goals and Eddie Pasquale stopped all 20 shots he faced, as the St. John's IceCaps blanked the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 5-0 Friday night at Mile One Centre.
Zach Redmond had a goal and an assist for the IceCaps, while Jerome Samson and Andrew Gordon picked up the other tallies.
Eric Hartzell - making just his third start of the season - turned aside 24 shots for the Penguins in a losing effort.
With just under five minutes to play in the opening period, the IceCaps got on the board first on a goal from Klingberg. After Hartzell made the initial save on Eric O'Dell's wrister, Klingberg was Johnny-on-the-spot in scooping up the rebound in front of the net and backhanding it upstairs to make it 1-0.
Picking up where he left off in the opening frame, Klingberg extended the IceCaps' lead to two at 12:11. Cycling behind the Penguins' net, JC Lipon slid the puck to Klingberg - parked in front the net, once again - who one-timed his sixth of the season short side past Hartzell.
Then, with the IceCaps on the power play, Redmond made it 3-0 at 17:35. Taking a cross-ice pass from Jordan Hill, Redmond launched a wrister from the point that fooled Hartzell blocker side.
In the third frame, the IceCaps scored two quick goals midway through to go ahead 5-0. Samson potted his eighth of the season on the power play, when he fired a wrister from a sharp angle that deflected off the stick of Penguins' rearguard Nick D'Agostino before trickling over the blocker of Hartzell. Just over a minute later, Gordon deflected a Redmond point shot that eluded the Penguins' netminder top shelf.
The IceCaps will look for the sweep when the two clubs close out the series Saturday (7:30 p.m. NT) at Mile One. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at www.stjohnsicecaps.com and on 930 AM This is Newfoundland Labrador, or watch online at www.ahllive.com. Pregame show gets underway at 7:00.
