Pirates Thrashed by Sharks 8-2

Worcester, MA - The Portland Pirates dropped their 4th straight game as the Worcester Sharks scored the game's first 5 goals to defeat the Pirates 8-2 in Worcester. Gilbert Brule scored a goal in his return to the Pirates to extend his goal scoring streak to 5 games. The 8 goals allowed by the Pirates was the most since dropping an 8-7 overtime decision to the St. John's IceCaps on October 23rd, 2012 and the largest margin of defeat since a 7-1 defeat at the hands of the Providence Bruins on March 3, 2013.

Worcester's scoring barrage started in the first. After the Pirates killed their 16th consecutive penalty, Sharks forward Freddy Hamilton's shot trickled past Mark Visentin and the Sharks took a 1-0 advantage at 14:29 of the first. 59 seconds later, Eriah Hayes extended the Sharks lead with his 3rd goal of the season, giving Worcester a 2-0 advantage they would carry into the intermission. The Sharks outshot the Pirates 16 to 5 in the first period.

Worcester would add to their lead early in the second. Matt Nieto tallied his first goal of the season just 1:15 into the second period, giving Worcester the 3-0 advantage. The Sharks then chased Mark Visentin as Danill Tarasov scored his 8th of the season at 3:10 of the second. Mike Lee was greeted by the Sharks' Travis Oleksuk, who scored on his own rebound to give the Sharks a 5-0 cushion. The Pirates were given life as Brendan Shinnimin was awarded a penalty shot with 8:52 left in the period, but Harri Sateri denied his five hole attempt. A power play opportunity would provide a spark for the Pirates, as the returning Gilbert Brule would break through on Sateri with just 50 seconds left in the period for his 7th goal of the year. Brule's goal, assisted by Daine Todd, extended his goal scoring streak to 5 games, tying him for the longest goal scoring streak in the AHL this season and ended the Pirates power play draught at 7.

Worcester continued their scoring in the third. Matt Nieto picked up the 5 on 3 power play tally just 49 seconds into the third period to extend the Sharks lead to 6-1. Nieto's second of the game was the first power play goal allowed by the Pirates in 17 penalty kill opportunities. Freddy Hamilton added his second of the night at 6:46 of the period to give the Sharks a 6 goal cushion. Brendan Shinnimin got another goal for the Pirates, tipping Rostislav Klesla's shot past Sateri to narrow the gap at 7:17 of the third. Klesla's assist was his first career AHL point, and Brandon McMillan picked up an assist as well. Marek Viedensky would add Worcester's 8th and final tally at 18:03 of the third to end the scoring for the night.

Mark Visentin and Mike Lee both allowed 4 goals for the Pirates, with Visentin making 19 saves and Lee making 14. Harri Sateri won his second straight start against Portland, making 29 saves. The 41 shots allowed by Portland marked the 4th straight game where they were out shot by their opponent, as well as they 4th straight loss.

The Pirates get back to action on tomorrow against the Manchester Monarchs at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in game three of the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Tires & Service. Puck drops at 7 PM.
