Penguins Recall Goaltender Mike Valley from Wheeling

WILKES-BARRE, PA. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have recalled goaltender Mike Valley from their East Hockey League affiliate, the Wheeling Nailers. The announcement was made today by Penguins' Head Coach Glenn Patrick.

Valley, 26, has a record of 0-1-0 with a 3.02 gaa and a .880 save percentage in one game this season with the Penguins. He stopped 22 of 25 shots in the Penguins' 4-2 loss at Norfolk on Nov. 15.

The 6'2", 185-pound native of Richmond, British Columbia has appeared in 33 games this season with the Nailers, posting a record of 13-15-3 (SOL)-4 (SOW) with two shutouts, a 3.35 goals against average and a .907 save percentage. Valley leads the ECHL in saves (1005) and is third in minutes played (1,844).

Last season, he played in 16 games with AIK Solna (Sweden) and posted a 3.70 goals against average. Prior to last season, he played three seasons (1998-2001) in North America with Louisiana and Augusta of the East Coast Hockey League and Syracuse of the American Hockey League.

Valley was invited to training camp and appeared in one preseason game with the Penguins. Valley made 50 saves in the Penguins' 2-2 tie at Binghamton on September 28.

He was signed by the Penguins to a two-way contract (AHL/ECHL) on October 3, 2002.

Valley will backup Robbie Tallas tonight as the third-place Penguins' (16-16-2-3, 37 points) begin a four-game road trip in Norfolk, Virginia tonight against the first-place Admirals (22-12-2-3, 49 points). Game time is set for 7:15 p.m. at the Norfolk Scope.

The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled goaltender Sebastien Caron yesterday from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and he served as a backup to Jean-Sebastien Aubin last night against the New York Islanders.

Caron, 22, has played in 26 games this season for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, posting a record of 11-14-1 with one shutout, a 3.12 goals against average and a .904 save percentage. Caron ranks third in the American Hockey League with 734 saves and ranks fifth with 1499 minutes played.

The 6-0 and 170 pound native of Amqui, Quebec was drafted by the Penguins in the fourth round (86th overall) of the 1999 Entry Draft. Caron has played in 102 career games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, posting a record of 37-50-12 with six shutouts and a 3.25 goals against average.

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced today that goaltender Johan Hedberg will be out of the lineup indefinitely with a fractured clavicle.
