Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-2 at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on Saturday night.
The Sound Tigers skated to victory on the back of Alan Quine, who scored his first career hat trick in the final meeting of the regular season between these two clubs.
Bridgeport quickly scored a power play goal 41 seconds into the game when Quine tracked down a loose puck atop the crease, giving the Sound Tigers an early 1-0 lead.
Quine struck again 2:00 into the second period and completed the hat trick at 10:11 of the middle frame, giving Bridgeport a 3-0 advantage.
Despite having doubled up the Sound Tigers in shots, 24-12, at one point, the Penguins saw Patrick Cullity's blast find its way through traffic and redirected in by Connor Jones on Bridgeport's 14th shot of the game, making the deficit 4-0 with 14.6 ticks left in the second period.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton got on the board 32 seconds into the third period thanks to a Dominik Simon goal assisted by Adam Krause and Dustin Jeffrey.
Bridgeport took back its four-goal lead when a beneficial bounce off the glass came to the stick of James Wright who put the puck into an empty net that had been vacated by Brian Foster in an attempt to settle the play for his defense. Wright's goal made it 5-1 for the Sound Tigers at 6:38 of the third.
Matthias Plachta scored his second goal as a Penguin by releasing a lightning wrist shot past Christopher Gibson at 16:01, bringing the game to its eventual final score of 5-2.
Gibson made 38 saves manning the crease for Bridgeport, his most this season. Splitting the workload in net for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Tristan Jarry recorded 13 saves on 17 shots, and Foster denied the Sound Tigers on six of their seven shots.
Bridgeport finished the game one-for-three on the power play, while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was unable to convert on any of its four man advantage opportunities.
The Penguins can bounce back as early as tomorrow afternoon, as they take on the Portland Pirates in a Sunday matinée at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Puck drop between the Penguins and Pirates is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
